August 6 - Rimouski to Val Brilliant - 105 km

The morning started off with a ride into Rimouski to find a bike shop. Success! Laura and I got matching bike jerseys and I got a new back tire. The cords started showing in my old one - I got about 3500 km on it. Then we found a great breakfast cafe.

Today we finished our ride along the St. Lawrence and we turned inland. The last 40 km to St. Flavie were gorgeous - but skies, cool, but alas a headwind. During this section of the trip I really noticed the smell of the ocean becoming stronger as the St. Lawrence River became the gulf.

Check out the photo of Leddy and Laura as we left the St. Lawrence Valley. Notice the Fleur de Lis in the background - straight out, flying hard in the wind. Great weather for sailors, but it makes bikers mumble. The next photo shows the rolling countryside with the ever present church on the horizon as you approach a village.

Inland the ride becomes "hillier" but not too bad. We go from sea level to about 250 metres elevation. The road is a combination of good (meaning paved shoulders) and bad (meaning unpaved shoulders and cracked edges). We use a strategy of riding off onto the unpaved shoulder when two large vehicles will pass beside us. Luckily, the shoulders are hard and good to ride on

We buy dinner provisions in Sayabec and meet Marcel. He's from Ontario but living around here. Aftre a good chat he gave us his phone number and told us to call if we had any problems. We didn't, but certainly appreciated the offer.

The day ended perfectly at a little B&B in Val Brilliant - we ate pate, cheese, bread and a great fruit salad on the veranda of the GrandPere Nicole B&B.

You know what matching jerseys mean...

Is that what you're wearing in the picture? Very nice!! Remember your favourite baby sister... ;)
